After visiting the community garden in Yachats, Oregon, and seeing their use of hazelnut shells around their garden beds, I have shamelessly bit their style and put hazelnut shells around my garden beds, too.
I got my hazelnut shells from a company called Highway Fuel in Marion County, Oregon. Fun fact, which I mention in the embedded video below from the Older Muscles YouTube channel: the Willamette Valley of Oregon produces 99% of the nation’s hazelnuts.
Hazelnut shells serve a functional gardening purpose in addition to looking cool and crunching under your feet. The shells help deter slugs and cats in your garden area, so if that is an issue for you, consider incorporating hazelnut shells around your garden area.
